What is EV Charger?

What is EV DC charging and AC charging (fast charging and slow charging)?

DC charging pile, commonly known as "fast charging", is a power supply device that is fixed outside the electric vehicle and connected to the AC grid to provide DC power to the non-vehicle electric vehicle power battery. The input voltage of the DC charging post is three-phase four-wire AC 380V ±15% (commonly known as 380V connection), frequency 50Hz, and the output is adjustable DC power, which directly charges the power battery of the electric vehicle. As the DC charging pile is powered by a three-phase four-wire system, it can provide sufficient power with a wide range of voltage and current adjustment to achieve the requirements of fast charging. For social passenger vehicles, the auxiliary power supply voltage is 12 V. Generally, it takes 1-2 hours to charge a vehicle battery from 0 to full, depending on the capacity of the power battery and the actual charging power of different models.

AC charging pile, commonly known as "slow charging", is a power supply device that is fixed outside the electric vehicle and connected to the AC grid, using 220V single-phase AC as the national standard, to provide AC power to the electric vehicle's on-board charger (i.e. the charger fixed to the electric vehicle). The AC charging post only provides power output, but has no charging function and needs to be connected to the vehicle charger to charge the EV. It is equivalent to a control power supply. The company is oriented towards social passenger vehicles and uses AC charging mode in line with national standards, with an output power of up to 7kW. It takes 5-8 hours for the general vehicle battery to be filled from 0 to full, depending also on the power battery capacity and actual charging power of different models.

Definition of charging pile, charger, charging equipment, charging facility, charging station, charging system, charging network

Charging pile: A traditional integrated AC/DC charging monopile device with an integrated charger. It is a special device that is fixed to the ground and provides charging for electric vehicle power batteries by means of conduction of electrical energy from the grid.

Charger: ①Sometimes the charging pile is also referred to as a charger ②On-board charger: a device that is fixedly installed in an electric vehicle to convert the electrical energy from the public grid into the DC electricity required by the on-board energy storage device and to charge the on-board energy storage device.

Charging equipment: refers to the relevant equipment or components that are connected to the electric vehicle or power battery and provide it with electrical energy, including charging piles, relevant transformer and distribution equipment, etc.

Charging facilities: A general term for the relevant equipment and facilities that provide electric energy for electric vehicles, generally including charging stations, decentralised or centrally arranged AC charging piles, supporting equipment and facilities for charging stations, etc.

Charging station: A special place consisting of 2 or more non-vehicle chargers for electric vehicles, which can charge electric vehicles and can monitor the status of the chargers and batteries during the charging process.

Charging system: A system consisting of all charging equipment, cables and related auxiliary equipment in a charging station.

Charging network: If a sufficient number of charging stations have been built within a certain geographical area and a reasonable layout has been formed, it can be called a charging network.

Electric vehicle charging precautions

Shallow charge and shallow discharge: The ideal time to charge is when the battery is 50%-70% discharged, so frequent charging is recommended. It is recommended that you charge the battery once a day, even if there is still plenty of power left, so that the battery is often in a shallow cycle, which will extend its life.

Reasonable use of fast/slow charging: long-term use of fast charging can cause battery life to decay, so it is recommended to use slow charging to top up when sufficient charging time is available.

Temperature has a large impact on charging: winter (low temperature environment) will cause the charging power to be reduced, the same time in the summer full, in the winter undercharge.

Regular charging: If the electric vehicle is not used for a long time, keep it charged regularly.
