Half a million cars in the UK are electric or hybrid, and internal combustion engine cars will be banned by 2030

More than half a million cars on the country's roads are electric or plug-in hybrids, according to the latest figures from the UK government.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said the "milestone" showed the UK was at the "forefront of the electric car revolution" and was a significant step towards the target Johnson identified, which would see the sale of petrol and diesel cars banned by 2030.

Figures released by the Department for Transport on 5 May show that more than half a million vehicles on UK roads are ultra-low emission vehicles. These mainly include pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but also include hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that there are around 40.4 million vehicles on UK roads, of which around 35.2 million are fuel efficient. All of this means that despite the government's delight at reaching this milestone, ultra-low emission vehicles still account for around 1.4% of vehicles on the roads of the UK and Northern Ireland.

However, there are other signs of optimism for those who support an all-electric future for cars, with figures released this week by the SMMT showing that purely electric vehicles will account for 6.5% of all new car sales in April 2021, compared to just 0.9% in the same month in 2019.

This is a trend that has been developing over the past few years, with pure electric vehicles accounting for 7.2% of all new car sales in the first four months of 2021. in the same month of 2020, the figure is 4%, while in the first four months of 2019 it is slightly less than 1%.

Grant Shapps, the UK Transport Secretary, said the growing popularity of electric vehicles had made the UK the second largest electric vehicle market in Europe.

"We want to drive decarbonisation on the global stage, which is why we are going further and faster to make our journey into the future as clean as possible," he said. "With news that the 500,000 milestone has been achieved and the fact that the UK is now the second largest electric vehicle market in Europe, it's clear that the shift to green cars is accelerating."

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said he hoped more drivers would switch to the electric car camp.

He said, "The automotive industry is changing the way we drive and with over half a million people already convinced by this incredible driving experience, we hope millions more will be willing to make the switch as the UK strives to become the best country to build, buy and drive an electric car.
