Innovative all-electric BMW iX3

According to media reports, BMW has decided to officially launch the production of battery components at its Leipzig and Regensburg plants in Germany recently. The Leipzig plant put into production BMW's first all-electric product, the i3, back in 2013. After the battery module is officially put into production, BMW will also produce the battery-powered i3 hatchback here.

The expansion of BMW's power battery production capacity in Germany should be related to its increased sales of electric vehicles and to achieve the Group's 2030 target announced earlier.

According to production and sales figures for the first quarter of this year, BMW set another first quarter sales record in China with 229,748 BMW and MINI vehicles delivered, nearly double the number for the same period in 2020 and up 36.4 per cent on the first quarter of 2019. Among other things, BMW also delivered its 100,000th new energy model in China - the all-electric BMW iX3. Produced in China and exported globally, sales of the BMW iX3 climbed rapidly during the first quarter of the year, with more than 1,000 units sold in a single month in March.

BMW says that, thanks to its own intelligent vehicle architecture and highly flexible production network, it will offer around 12 all-electric models worldwide by 2023, with all-electric vehicles covering around 90 percent of the market segment. In the coming years, purely electric versions of the BMW 5 Series, BMW X1, BMW 7 Series and other models will be launched. Annual sales of purely electric BMW Group models are expected to grow by an average of more than 50 percent per year between now and 2025; in 2025, the BMW Group will sell more than ten times as many purely electric vehicles as it did in 2020 and complete the delivery of its two millionth purely electric model.

In addition, BMW is also conducting in-depth research into solid-state battery technology. Prototypes equipped with solid-state batteries will be ready by 2025, with production on board by 2030", said BMW director Weber van. Battery energy density is expected to be 50% higher than today by then, and at least 50% of BMW's global sales will be purely electric vehicles.

In addition, BMW expects to sell a total of around 10 million purely electric vehicles worldwide over the next decade.
