What is a DC Fast Charger?
DC Fast Charger refers to electric EV chargers directly output DC (direct current) power to the EV batteries. This is also called DC fast charging. The DC fast chargers will convert the local high AC power to DC power suitable for the EV batteries and send the DC current to batteries directly. Level 2 charging stations (AC EV chargers) are using AC (alternate current) output, which is commonly see in every household. While using AC charging stations, the EVs have ''onboard charger'' inside the car that convert AC power to DC for the battery. This is why DC chargering stations are faster than AC EV charging stations.
Features of DC Fast Chargers/Charging Stations
DC fast chargers are the highest-powered EV chargers on the market. They often are used as range extenders along major travel corridors for long-distance trips and in urban environments to support drivers without home charging or very high mileage drivers. Most DC fast chargers on the market charge at rates of 25-50kW. At current charging speeds, they are ideal for places where a person would spend 30 minutes to an hour, such as restaurants, recreational areas and shopping centers.
Currently available DC fast chargers require inputs of 480+ volts and 100+ amps (50-60kW) and can produce a full charge for an EV with a 100-mile range battery in slightly more than 30 minutes (178 miles of electric drive per hour of charging). However, new generations of DC fast chargers are gaining traction and can produce 150-350kW of power.
How does 60KW 2 Guns CCS DC Fast Charging Station work?
Every car battery follows what's called a ''charging curve'' when charging. Charging starts slow while your car monitors several factors (from your battery's charge level to the weather outside), climbs to peak speeds for as long as possible and slows down again around 80% to prolong battery life. (We'll show you what these "charging curves" of charging speed look like in some upcoming posts.)
With a DC fast charger, it's best to unplug when your battery reaches about 80% charge. That's when charging slows dramatically-it could take almost as long to fill the last 20% of charge as it did to get to 80% in the first place. Unplugging when you get to 80% charge is not only more efficient for you, it's also considerate to other EV drivers and helps make sure that as many people as possible can use fast charging stations.
How fast is fast charging?
Charging times are dependent on the battery size and the output of the dispenser, and other factors, but many vehicles are capable of getting an 80% charge in about or under an hour using most currently available DC fast chargers.
