Germany persuades Tesla to open up Supercharger network to make it easier to charge electric cars

IT House, June 17 - Germany's transport minister is trying to persuade Tesla to open up its network of Superchargers to other carmakers to make it easier for electric car drivers to charge.

German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer told German newspaper Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung that there are some technical issues to be resolved, but he expects a solution to be reached, adding that the goal is to ensure that consumers can use the charging stations of various brands through a single payment system, preferably via their smartphones.

Andreas Schell said, "I am in direct talks with car manufacturers such as Tesla to ensure that existing infrastructure, such as Tesla's Superchargers, will be open to other manufacturers."

Tesla currently operates more than 1,000 charging points in Germany. Expanding the necessary infrastructure to drive mass adoption of electric vehicles in Germany has been a challenge, with different automakers and utilities launching separate initiatives. According to the energy industry group BDEW, Germany currently has a total of around 40,000 public charging points.

Tesla's Supercharger network is one of the most robust and complete in the world, with more than 25,000 Supercharger stations worldwide offering charging speeds of up to 250 kilowatts for Tesla electric vehicles.

IT House has learned that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has spoken about opening up Tesla Superchargers on several occasions in the past, most recently in December 2020 when he tweeted, "They're doing it, even if it's a bit low key. Tesla Superchargers are opening up to other electric cars."
