A diverter is an instrument used to measure DC current. When DC current flows through a resistance, a voltage is generated at both ends of the resistance and made into a constant low resistance generally used to expand the current flow. It is usually connected in parallel with the moving coil of an ammeter or current detector, both inside and outside the meter.

What is the specific role of the diverter?


The diverter is based on the principle that DC current passes through a resistor and generates a voltage across the resistor. Diverters are widely used to extend the measuring current range of meters, with fixed fixed value diverters and precision alloy resistors, and can be used in communication systems, electronic overall, automatic control power supplies and other circuits to limit the flow and sample the detection of equal flow. Diverter for DC current measurement are slotted and non-slotted, the diverter has manganese nickel copper alloy resistor bars and copper tape with nickel plating layer, its rated voltage drop is 60mV, but can also be used as 75, 100, 120, 150, 300mV. A diverter is a resistor capable of passing very high currents generally commonly used for 15A or 20A and 35A ammeters require a diverter.

How to choose a diverter?


(1) Select the rated voltage drop of the diverter according to the number of mV indicated on the dial of the ammeter (or current-voltage dual-use meter) used (generally 75mV or 45mV is commonly used). If the ammeter used does not have this value, the following formula is used to calculate the voltage limit of the table, and then select the rated voltage drop specification of the diverter. The voltage limit of the table (mV) = current at full scale of the ammeter (A) x internal resistance of the ammeter (Ω) x 1000


(2) Select the rated current specification of the diverter according to the current range you wish to extend.


(3) The two current ends of the selected diverter are connected to the power supply and the load, and the potential end is connected to the ammeter, attention should be paid to the terminal polarity of the ammeter to connect the right, then the range of the ammeter is expanded to the current value calibrated on the diverter.

How is the current meter multiplier calculated after using a diverter?


For motor test measurements, a current meter is often equipped with several diverters in order to solve the problem of ensuring the required measurement accuracy over a wide measuring range. In this case, the rated voltage drop of all diverters used is the same as that of the current meter, e.g. 75 mV. Thus, after the diverter has been selected, the full range of the current meter is the rated current of the selected diverter and the current meter multiplier (i.e. the number of currents per cell of the dial scale) is the rated current of the diverter divided by the total number of cells of the dial scale.
