Range and charging rate are the key to the future development of electric vehicles, and whoever can master these two technologies will have a head start in the electrification revolution.

According to CNBC, an Israeli startup called StoreDot has developed a new battery technology that can compress the charging time of power batteries to less than five minutes.

The two major hurdles of range and charging rate are key to determining whether electric vehicles can overtake fuel vehicles in terms of market share, and new energy vehicle companies are looking for ways to improve these two parameters.

David Ayrton, Chief Technology Officer of BP Group, has publicly expressed his views on charging technology. He believes that there will be more fast charging pads in operation worldwide in the future.

Owners of purely electric cars cannot afford to spend three hours or more charging. Owners want to charge in 10 minutes and be back on the road, which requires 300-400kW of charging power.

StoreDot is one of the companies that BP has invested in. In addition to this, the start-up has also attracted investment from Daimler Group and Samsung.

Not long ago, the lithium-ion company and BP jointly presented this fast-charging technology to the public.

In the demonstration, they quickly charged a battery pack containing 168 battery cells to full capacity in less than five minutes.

According to the test, this fast-charging technology can give an electric car a theoretical range of 480 kilometres in five minutes.

However, the test was carried out using an electric scooter rather than an electric car. But StoreDot CEO Dawn Mills told the press that the electric scooter from Spanish company Torrot demonstrated the technical capabilities of StoreDot.

StoreDot is not alone in its research into fast-charging technology.

With the global wave of car electrification on the horizon, more and more car companies are looking for solutions to the problem of slow charging of electric cars, and one of them is the well-known car company Porsche.

The veteran racing company recently unveiled an electric model that adds 60 miles of range in just four minutes of charging, a technology sourced from a number of innovative companies such as Sila Nanotechnologies and QuantumScape.

But not to be outdone, Dorn Milsdorf claims to be developing a new generation of lithium batteries. Significantly, this battery will not use the graphene material commonly used in fast-charging technology.

The entrepreneur says that the reason for abandoning the use of graphene material is that it has a number of drawbacks. It might be better to add a mixture of tin, germanium, silicon and some other organic compounds to the raw materials used in the production of the new generation of batteries.

StoreDot is currently planning to build a battery manufacturing centre similar to the Tesla super factory, which may be called OneGiga. there is a heated debate within the company about the location.

Dorn Mills expects that five-minute charging technology for smartphones and mobile power will be available in the second half of 2020, while fast charging technology for electric cars may be available in 2023.

The company's ultimate goal is to offer fast charging services to electric cars and even electric trucks. Within the next year, StoreDot is expected to demonstrate its "five-minute charging" technology for Mercedes-Benz models.

Jon Sackett, BP's senior technical director for mobility, said in an interview that electric vehicles will play a leading role in the future of transport, which is the main reason why BP is investing in the relevant technology and infrastructure.

For traditional oil companies, electrification brings new opportunities, and traditional energy companies can thus expand into new business areas.

BP's investment in StoreDot is intended to expand its technology portfolio in the area of fast charging.

Now, the old oil company has got what it wanted.
