The UK government is pushing new energy vehicles, but there is a shortfall of 365,000 charging piles

According to a report on the BBC website on February 2, the British Policy Exchange think-tank said that the number of electric car charging stations built in the UK is behind the number needed for the government's fuel car ban.

The agency's report says there are many "charging blind spots" in small towns and rural areas of the UK. Unless the rate of installation of new charging piles is accelerated, it will be difficult to alleviate this plight.

According to the report, 400,000 public charging stations will be needed in the UK by 2030, and only 35,000 have been built so far.

The influential think tank said that in order to meet the 2030 ban on new conventionally-fuelled vehicles, the number of ev charging stations built in the UK will have to increase from around 7,000 per year in the past three years to 35,000 per year over the next 10 years.

The researchers recommend that the government should contract out this construction project to private companies to encourage them to build ev charging points in areas where facilities are scarce.

At the same time, the report calls for dedicated transport funding to be provided to local authorities across the UK to form dedicated teams to promote the construction of charging points in residential areas.

The report also says that in the foreword to the report, Simon Clarke, a Conservative MP and former minister for regional growth and local government in the UK, wrote: "Fuel car drivers can travel hundreds of miles by car knowing that they will come across a petrol station every so often, but new energy vehicles do not yet have such facilities."

Clark added: "Some areas have naturally developed impressive coverage of charging stations, such as central London, but this is not the case for large swathes of the country."

The report says the UK government should focus construction on those areas where local government finances are under-invested, including the North West of England, Yorkshire and Northern Ireland."
