Germany: both pure electric and plug-in sales double, market share reaches 22%

In January, the German electric passenger car market continued the momentum of the end of last year, with sales doubling to 36,903 units. As things stand, the strong momentum for electric vehicles in Germany has not yet stopped.

In January, German pure electric vehicle sales jumped 118% year-on-year to 16,315 units, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales rose by a further 138% to 20,588 units, allowing PHEVs to continue to lead BEVs in terms of electric vehicle market share, with the former at 56% and the latter at 44%.

This excellent performance, combined with the sharp decline in the overall car market (down 31% year-on-year), has seen the market share of EVs rise from 6.6% in January last year to 22% currently, with pure EVs at 9.6% and plug-in hybrids at 12.1%.

The Volkswagen ID.3 topped the list of best-selling electric cars in Germany in January with 1,799 units sold, with the Volkswagen e-UP in second place, giving the German-based carmaker the top two positions. The Volkswagen Passat GTE, on the other hand, sadly missed out on the bronze medal as it fell just 14 units short of third place. But it wasn't just VW that did well, BMW also took its place in the model list, with two models, the X3 PHEV and the X5 PHEV, even recording the highest monthly sales record. Mercedes had four models on the list, so only two seats on the list were finally reserved for foreign car companies, with the Hyundai Kona EV at number 7 and the Renault Zoe at number 8. The Tesla Model 3 did not make the list.
