Dutch start-up We Drive Solar and South Korean conglomerate Hyundai have announced plans to deploy 500 electric vehicle charging stations with bi-directional technology in the Utrecht region, which will allow electric vehicles to not only charge, but also supply electricity to the grid when needed, reports pv-magazine. These charging stations will be initially tested on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is equipped with bi-directional charging technology. By the beginning of 2022, 150 two-way charging shared cars will be deployed in the Utrecht region.
The project aims to provide greater flexibility to the congested Dutch grid by standardising the technology, controlling the software, scientifically validating the 'bi-directional ecosystem', applying bi-directional shared vehicles on a large scale in urban areas and recommending this bi-directional solution to PV system owners.
Partners in this project include Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, the City of Utrecht and the City of Arnhem.
