On World Environment Day, 5 June this year, Toyota China released a poster. The theme of the poster is: "Save all you can, make the world a better place". In the top left corner of the poster, the circle reads: Toyota's cumulative sales of electrified models exceeded 18 million worldwide.

The note at the bottom of the poster reads: World Environment Day, June 5, Go low-carbon with Toyota's electrified models. As of May 2021, there are more than 18 million electrified model owners worldwide and over 1.2 million customers nationwide, joining Toyota to help achieve carbon neutrality, walk with nature and make the world a more beautiful place.

The 18 million electrified vehicles include hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), pure electric (EV) and hydrogen fuel (FCEV) battery vehicles sold by both Toyota and Lexus brands over the years. Of the 18 million Toyota electrified vehicles, the majority were hybrid models.

Toyota's electrified models have cumulatively reduced emissions by 147 million tonnes

Toyota is a global pioneer in hybrid technology and holds many patents in hybrid technology. Compared with the same class of gasoline engine vehicles, Toyota hybrid models have 30% more power and 40% less fuel, which is a significant energy-saving and emission reduction effect, and is the most mature advanced vehicle energy-saving technology.

As a responsible multinational automotive group, Toyota has been striving to achieve "carbon neutrality" by continuously promoting electrification to achieve zero CO2 emissions in order to protect the global environment. In the 24 years since the world's first mass-produced hybrid Prius was launched in 1997, nearly 18 million hybrid models have been sold worldwide. Over the past 24 years, Toyota has launched 45 HEV models, four PHEV models, four EV models and two FCEV models worldwide. Having launched and sold the world's first mass-produced Prius in 1997, Toyota has mastered core electrification technologies such as batteries, motors and electric controls through the accumulation of HEV development, and has become the only automaker with a full range of electrification product development for HEVs, PHEVs, EVs and FCEVs.

It is estimated that the 18 million Toyota electrified vehicles have reduced gasoline consumption by about 55 billion litres and CO2 emissions by about 147 million tonnes.

Toyota's contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and low-carbon mobility is more than any other automotive company in the world, and is at the forefront of the world's efforts.

Toyota's electrification strategy accelerates in China

In 2006, the Toyota hybrid Prius was produced and sold in the Sino-Japanese joint venture FAW Toyota, followed by the hybrid Camry in GAC Toyota.

In order to reduce costs and accelerate the popularity of hybrid models in the Chinese market, Toyota has built a Toyota R&D Centre in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, which was completed and opened on 14 November 2013.

One of the key tasks of Toyota's China R&D Centre is to localise Toyota's hybrid technology (HEV) and plug-in hybrid technology (PHEV). The first hybrid vehicles to realise the localisation of core technologies were officially introduced to the market in 2015. At this point, Toyota's strategy to promote hybrid technology in China began to gather speed. The localisation of Toyota's hybrid core technology has greatly reduced the cost of Toyota hybrid models produced in China and promoted the sales of hybrid models. This has promoted energy saving and emission reduction in China's automotive sector and contributed to the improvement of China's increasingly severe air quality.

Currently, Toyota's two joint ventures in China, FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota, have launched 12 Toyota electrified models. These include seven hybrid models, three plug-in hybrids and two pure electric models. Eight of the Lexus models sold in China are hybrid twin-engine models. Currently, hybrid models account for about 35 per cent of Lexus' sales in China. On June 6, FAW Toyota held the online launch of the all-new EIZO. The new EIZO is available in both fuel and hybrid twin-engine versions. late June will see the official launch of the new fourth generation of the GAC Toyota Hanlanda, which adds a hybrid twin-engine version in addition to the fuel version. Toyota's electrified model matrix in China has been further expanded.

Toyota has been committed to the development of all-round electrification in China, in addition to the continuous launch of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, by 2025 in China to launch as many as 10 pure electric models, become an important part of the realization of "2050 new car driving process carbon emissions reduction of 90% compared to the 2010 medium and long-term goals".
