Singapore launches new energy vehicle infrastructure policy

2021-03-19 14:52:51  News

On March 8, Bloomberg released a news release stating that Singapore's Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said in a public speech last week, "Switching from fuel-consuming fuel vehicles to electric vehicles will reduce carbon emissions, even though the electricity for electric vehicles is generated by fossil fuels."

Bloomberg news also pointed out that the Singapore government will launch a series of new energy ev charging station policies from February 2021, providing S$30 million (about 145 million yuan) in subsidies for new energy vehicles over five years, and plans to build more than 60,000 ev charging piles in public parking lots and private spaces in the city by 2030.

In addition, Singapore has announced a 40% reduction in the road tax rate for new energy vehicles and has decided to abolish the S$5,000 (RMB 24,000) registration tax on new energy vehicles from January 2022. Singapore also plans to electrify all public transport vehicles by 2040, phasing out all conventional fuel-powered models. Meanwhile, Singapore's transport authority will no longer allow diesel-powered models to be registered as new vehicles from 2025.

Bloomberg analysis said that by 2023, Singapore's new energy vehicle ownership will continue to increase by virtue of this series of favorable policies, the overall sales ratio will reach 4%, the average annual number of new energy vehicles up to 3,300.

It is worth mentioning that before this, the relevant authorities in Singapore have been taking a strict management system for new energy vehicles and taxing them heavily. Singapore's management believes that although new energy vehicles do not produce exhaust fumes in the process of driving on the road, the power plants that provide electricity for them will produce huge pollution. Once the number of new energy vehicles increases, the demand for electricity in Singapore will be raised, and power plants will need to consume more energy to power them, a process that in effect increases environmental pollution.

Now, Singapore has launched a series of policies that fully demonstrate the country's change of attitude toward electric vehicles. A Singaporean government official said that the city is actually very suitable for new energy vehicles due to the short driving distance and the country's strict control over the acquisition of cars.
