On 18 May, Stellantis NV ("Stellantis Group") and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. together with its subsidiary Foxconn Group Ltd. announced the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") to form a 50/50 voting joint venture called "Mobile Drive", a joint venture company. The goal of the new joint venture is to accelerate technology development to deliver innovative in-car user experiences that exceed consumer expectations through advanced consumer electronics, human-machine interfaces and services.
Mobile Drive will combine the Stellantis Group's global experience in vehicle design and engineering with Foxconn's development strength in smartphone and consumer electronics hardware and software in an effort to position Mobile Drive at the forefront of a new global frontline of in-car infotainment capabilities, enabling seamless connectivity inside and outside the car. The Stellantis Group and Foxconn will jointly own all the development results of the Mobile Drive joint venture.
Based in the Netherlands, Mobile Drive will be operated as an automotive supplier and will participate in bidding for software solutions and related hardware supplies from Stellantis Group and other car manufacturers interested in the joint venture. The partnership will break the technological boundaries of connected cars and deliver an immersive experience yet to be imagined.
Foxconn and Stellantis Group have previously collaborated on the Airflow Vision design concept vehicle, which was showcased at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES®), and which demonstrates the two companies' thinking on the next generation of premium mobility and user experiences.
Mobile Drive will build on Foxconn's extensive experience in user experience and software development for the mobile ecosystem to deliver disruptive smart cockpit solutions that seamlessly integrate vehicles into drivers' lifestyles centred on mobile mobility. At times, Mobile Drive will focus on infotainment, telematics and cloud services platform development, and its software innovations will include artificial intelligence-based applications, 5G communications, upgraded OTA wireless remote services, e-commerce and smart cockpit integration solutions.
