Electrification of three product lines by the end of 2024 Lamborghini's future outlook

On May 18th, Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, shared with us online his plans for Automobili Lamborghini for the next ten years. Among them will be the electrification of the brand's entire product range by 2024 and the launch of the first all-electric supercar in 2030.

Stephan Winkelmann said during the online presentation that the entire industry is currently at a crossroads, with the main challenges facing the automotive industry coming from strict regulations and controls on CO2 emission targets and changes in consumer perceptions and lifestyles.

A new generation is growing up with a greater concern for the environment and every company, and everyone, needs to pick up the pace. For a supercar manufacturer, meeting CO2 emissions regulations and Euro 7 targets means finding a balance between significantly lower emissions and a product that performs even better than previous models. This is what Lamborghini customers expect, so we had to regroup and reappear, while at the same time staying true to our roots, to the Lamborghini DNA and values.

This is obviously a major challenge, but fortunately Lamborghini has proven itself with outstanding results. In particular in terms of sustainability and the transformation of the company, in 2005 Lamborghini was small, with only two product lines, the Gallardo and the Murcielago, and an annual production of just 1,600 units.

With the launch of the Urus concept, the first SUV, at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, and its production launch in 2018, Lamborghini has entered a new dimension.

In the 15 years from 2005 to 2020, Lamborghini has achieved a sevenfold increase in turnover. In spite of the challenges posed by the global epidemic in 2020, Lamborghini has achieved its best ever operating margin in 2020. This result not only gives us more information, but also valuable lessons.

If we want to remain competitive, we need to shorten our development times and adhere to strict principles. After a good start with the Urus, we will move on to the second phase. In the next ten years, Lamborghini will be planning hybrids for all three lines.

For the first all-electric Lamborghini, we are looking ahead to electrification, with a clear objective and on the ground, while remaining true to the brand's roots and its DNA.

At the product level, the focus will remain on the internal combustion engine in 2021-2022, before the launch of the first electric Lamborghini, the first plug-in model in 2023 and the transition to hybrid power at the end of 2024, with all three lines of the brand being electrified. 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from 2025 onwards for the Lamborghini hybrid range. And in terms of technology, more lightweight materials such as carbon fibre will be applied to offset the increased weight of the car due to electrification, giving Lamborghini an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

In addition, between 2025 and 2030, the first all-electric Lamborghini hypercar will be launched. This supercar is expected to have a 2+2 four-seat layout and will open up the newest layout of the Lamborghini family.

In terms of financial investment, over four years Lamborghini will inject more than €1.5 billion (approximately R12 billion) to address the full electrification transition.

Lamborghini's first plug-in hybrid will be the mid-life facelift Urus, which will be released in 2023, and according to previous reports, the hybrid version of the Urus could weigh 551 pounds (about 250 kg) more compared to the current model. In addition, Lamborghini will also release two new V12 models before the end of 2021.
