Denmark to develop new electric car batteries with a range of 350 km in 6 minutes on a full charge

One of the obstacles to the mass adoption of electric cars is the long charging time and short battery range.

Less than 1% of vehicles on Europe's roads are now electric, mainly because of the long charging times and short range of electric car batteries. Even charging a car at the fastest charging stations takes a long time, while refuelling the vehicle takes just a moment.

However, this difference will soon be a thing of the past. In the next few years, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark will develop a new battery for electric cars that can be fully charged in just six minutes and has a range of up to 350 kilometres, according to reports in the media. In addition, the battery will have a life expectancy of at least 20 years and will be virtually maintenance-free.

Using an innovative system design and a new chemical process, we want to create a super-efficient battery that takes up less space and is lighter in weight," says Corneliu Barbu, assistant professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aarhus University. The idea is to create a modular and expandable battery that can also be used in trucks and buses and can also be easier to repair, as only the defective part needs to be replaced, not the whole battery."

A highly innovative design

The researchers' idea designs the battery as a modular battery pack carpet that can be fitted under the seat of a car, thus allowing the battery to remain lighter while allowing for greater safety, lower mass production costs and more efficient thermal management.

We wanted to control heat digitally and intelligently, which is a key factor," says Corneliu Barbu. Batteries need a huge energy transfer to be able to charge quickly, so a key design challenge in our research was to ensure that the batteries had a high enough level of safety.

Another part of the project is that the researchers need to develop a charging station for the new battery, which they hope to be able to debut as a prototype within four years and be in commercial mass production within seven years.

Denmark is part of the future car industry

Corneliu Barbu said that the project will have an impact on the overall transition to green mobility in Europe and that Denmark will also play an important role in the electric vehicle industry with other European partners.

The researchers will also develop the battery using advanced digital twin technology, which will allow researchers to avoid mistakes, make better design decisions for electronics and computer technology, and identify the best materials.

Sustainability will run through the value chain

Sustainability is an important part of the researchers' development of the next generation of batteries, which aims to have a much lower carbon footprint than that of existing electric vehicle batteries.

The project currently has a total of 18 partners in eight countries and will continue over the next four years.
