What is a DC Fast Charger?

"DC" refers to "direct current", the type of power that batteries use. EVs have "on board chargers" inside the car that convert AC power to DC for the battery. DC fast chargers convert AC power to DC within the charging station and deliver DC power directly to the battery, which is why they charge faster.

How do I charge my EV?

There are a three main types of EV charge point (slow, fast and rapid) and a number of charging connectors, some of which are suitable for a specific EV.

The vehicle's inlet port and the charger type will determine which socket you use. Rapid chargers use CHAdeMO, CCS or Type 2 connectors. Fast and slow units (such as a home charging point) normally use Type 2, Type 1, Commando or 3-pin plug outlets.

European electric vehicles (such as Audi, BMW, Renault, Mercedes, VW, and Volvo) usually have Type 2 inlets and the CCS rapid standard. Nissan and Mitsubishi manufacturers tend to use a Type 1 connector and CHAdeMO inlet. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric and Toyota Prius Plug-In use Type 2 connector.
